Passengers flying to many EU destinations are no longer required to wear masks, but Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain are among the countries that are complying.
The European Union began easing policies on Monday, in line with changing Covid guidelines for European public transport.
But Italy requires passengers to continue to wear the more protective FFP2 masks on public transport until June 15.
Among the 27 EU countries that still require masks on flights are: Portugal, Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Patrick Ky, executive director of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which announced the EU-wide easing last week, said: “We have finally reached a stage in the People breathe a sigh of relief. Hygiene safety measures are relaxed.”
Vulnerable passengers should continue to wear FFP2 masks, and passengers should generally practice social distancing wherever possible, EASA said.
The new guidelines across the EU are accompanied by some cautionary advice from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
ECDC Director Andrea Ammon said that while wearing a mask is no longer mandatory, it’s important to remember that “along with physical distancing and good hand hygiene, this is one of the best ways to reduce transmission.”
”Further, as of May 16, 2022, aircraft operators should continue to encourage passengers and crew to wear masks during and at airports, even when masks are not required, before and during flights,” the ECDC said.
